There are many great places to ski around the world, in this article, I’m going to focus on Avoriaz in the French Alps, in the Porte De Soleil region, as it provides facilities for all levels of skier as well as families and hardened skiers who like the challenge of off-piste skiing. It’s a car free resort and offers something a bit different for those who visit.
Below are the five best reasons to visit Avoriaz, in my opinion, having skied the area many times in the past.
Giant Ski Area
Avoriaz is perfectly positioned in the centre of the Portes do Soleil ski area in France and Switzerland. With 650km of high altitude slopes you are best placed for the ultimate sking and boarding experience. You can enjoy panoramic sking between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, criss crossing over the French Swiss borders as you ski. In this vast area you have the option of skiing in a different resort every day and take in the beauty that they all have to offer. Mountain restaurants and cafes are ideally placed providing you with options for refreshments every step of the way.
As Avoriaz is the only car-free resort in France, it’s safe so parents can rest assured their children are safe from traffic. It makes an ideal holiday resort for families with an ice rink, sledge slope and a children’s village all located in the centre of Avoriaz.
Cars are replaced with horse and carriage, providing visitors with the unique experience of traveling in true style around the village.
Skiing for All
The huge variety of slopes makes it an ideal choice for every level of skier. The resort has adopted their snowpark design from the Californian resort of North Star and have accommodated a freestyle section in the middle of the forest. Alongside this there are three natural non-groomed slopes of varying steepness winding down through the trees in the Lindarets forest.
As its located on a south-facing plateau, it makes for the perfect place to enjoy some good old apre-ski at the end of a hard days skiing on an outside terrace, whilst enjoying the last of the day’s sun.
Avoriaz is known for its full programme of ski and music events throughout the ski season, providing truly spectacular entertainment for all tastes. Shows have included snow dance floor, night parties, go wild music festivals and jazz festivals, to mention a few. Obviously there are the bars around the complex who also offer entertainment of various kinds.
